“Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi, otherwise known as Khoo Kongsi, is a unique historical heritage enclave and also the UNESCO World Heritage site in Penang, Malaysia. Khoo Kongsi is clan association of the Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi clan, whose ancestors came from Sin Kang clan village in Hokkien province, China. Khoo Kongsi, together with Cheah, Yeoh, Lim and Tan Kongsi, were known as the Five Big Clans that formed the backbone of the Hokkien community early in Penang. When the Khoos established Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi in Penang, the Khoo clan had brought along with them the social structure and culture of South-eastern China to this British colony. Khoo Kongsi is one of the most distinctive Chinese clan associations in Malaysia. It is well known worldwide for this extensive linage that can be traced back 650 years ago, as well as closely-knit and defensive congregation of buildings and a magnificent clanhouse. ”
